Diesel engine generators (whether running on biofuels or not) must be operated regularly, at least every few weeks, to avoid long-term damage through lack of use. In an unused engine, water and other combustion by-products can attack internal parts, lubricating oils slowly degrade and sludge collects in the coolant water. These factors all conspire to reduce engine life.
The solution is to operate the engine every month for short periods, ideally under conditions of load.
If an engine we have installed is not operated for a significant period then we arrange to connect it to our mobile load bank (effectively a huge electric heater), which simulates optimum operating conditions. Any generator owner within reasonable distance of our offices is welcome to rent the load bank when necessary to maintain their engines. Our load bank is mounted on a trailer and rated at a maximum load of 240kW. |
